Current UFC Welterweight Champion Matt “The Terror” Serra is scheduled for a rematch with current Interim Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre in Montreal, Canada.
UFC 83 should be a thriller as it’s the first time the UFC is going to have an event in Canada, and it just so happens that St. Pierre is from Quebec. So even though he’s challenging Serra for the Welterweight title, it’s as though he has a bit of home court advantage.
Serra originally won the belt from St. Pierre back in a previous event - and now St. Pierre is looking for some revenge and his title back after an impressive victory in which he dominated Matt Hughes. Matt Serra was originally scheduled to fight Hughes in that fight following both of their coaching stints on The Ultimate Fighter Serra Vs. Hughes - but a back injury forced him to pull out of the fight.
It should be an interesting match up as St. Pierre is considered by many to be the man in the Welterweight division, so if Serra can beat him a second time to maintain the title it’ll prove to everybody that he is for real.
Have you ever wondered how your favorite movie star or martial arts ‘expert’ or professional wrestler would do in the octagon against a real cage fighter?
Well, this Saturday we’re going to get to see. Brock Lesnar, professional wrestler, is going to step into the UFC’s octagon and take on former UFC Heavyweight champ Frank Mir.
Don’t be fooled by Lesnar’s relative inexperience - the guy’s still a beast. And he was a world class wrestler in college and high school with numerous titles and even a national championship. He has an MMA record of 1 and 0, having already made his MMA debut back in June in which he won in 69 seconds.
It’ll be an interesting fight and we’re all waiting to see how Lesnar’s wrestling stardom translates to the UFC.
Also on the card is Tim Sylvia taking on Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera.
Like his coach on the Ultimate Fighter 6, Tommy Speer is a strong wrestler who grew up on a crop and dairy farm in Elgin, Minnesota. His coach, Matt Hughes, one of the most decorated UFC fighters ever, grew up on a farm as well. Hughes credits much of his success to the hard labor of the farm which developed a natural strength that overwhelms many of his opponents.
Tommy Speer has similar strength. So far on this season of The Ultimate Fighter, he looks like he is one of the strongest guys living in the Ultimate Fighter house. In his last match in the quarterfinals against Ben Saunders, Tommy Speer overwhelmed Saunders taking him down to the mat and holding him there where he pounded Saunders into submission.
Tommy has a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) record of 9 wins and 1 loss, and he’s only 22 years old. Upon graduating high school in 2003, Speer immediately began training in mixed martial arts in Rochester, Minnesota at Fourth Street Boxing. He also trains in Jiu Jitsu at Mario Roberto Jiu Jitsu. One of the favorites from the beginning of The Ultimate Fighter, George Sotiropoulos has established himself as a dangerous fighter after taking out Jared “J Roc” Rollins and Richie Hightower.
Matt Serra, the current UFC Welterweight Champion and coach of Sotiropoulos on The Ultimate Fighter 6, picked George to be on his team because of his talent and mixed martial arts abilities. George Sotiropoulos is a superbly well rounded fighters, probably one of the most well rounded on this season of The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV.
George grew up in Geelong, Victoria in Australia and spent much of his time growing up looking for different thrills. He describes himself as a thrill seeker, and his quest to fight in the UFC probably ranks right up there with the other thrills he has experienced. Read more… »
