I just finished watching the third 2-hour block of the mini-series “Tin Man” on the Sci Fi Channel. The mini-series enjoyed a heavy marketing campaign leading up to it’s premier last Sunday which may have contributed to my disappointment upon watching the full series.

I felt as though there was a huge amount of potential to remake L. Frank Baum’s classic “Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” But with that potential, there was also a good chance that it could bomb in shadow of such a fantastic story.

I did like some of the ways that the story was rethought. The ways that the characters like the Tin Man and the Scarecrow shared the qualities of the originals, but had also been updated were interesting. The fact that the Tin Man was a “Tin Man” (Policeman) and also spent a long time imprisoned in a immobile tin suit were interesting twists. The ‘Wizard of Oz’ was recast as a drug addicted mystic in the new one.

But once the mini-series ventured past these ‘updates,’ there was something missing. Or perhaps there was just too much filler causing the story to seem overdone and underwritten. Even with the fantastic Zooey Deschanel in the lead playing DG, the new version of Dorothy, the series was lacking. Often I felt like I was watching a bad sci fi series with poor special effects - and unfortunately I had to watch all 6 hours as I kept hoping for it to be better than it was.

Remaking a classic is a tough thing to do. The idea with “Tin Man” was right, but unfortunately the writing just didn’t hold a candle up to the original.
