The Ultimate Fighter: Team Hughes Vs. Team Serra - Fighter Profile: George Sotiropoulos
Posted on Dec 03, 2007 under Martial Arts, Reality Television, Television, UFC |
One of the favorites from the beginning of The Ultimate Fighter, George Sotiropoulos has established himself as a dangerous fighter after taking out Jared “J Roc” Rollins and Richie Hightower.
Matt Serra, the current UFC Welterweight Champion and coach of Sotiropoulos on The Ultimate Fighter 6, picked George to be on his team because of his talent and mixed martial arts abilities. George Sotiropoulos is a superbly well rounded fighters, probably one of the most well rounded on this season of The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV.
George grew up in Geelong, Victoria in Australia and spent much of his time growing up looking for different thrills. He describes himself as a thrill seeker, and his quest to fight in the UFC probably ranks right up there with the other thrills he has experienced.
While living in Australia George started training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with a local club. His skills in this martial art are well developed, and he is considered to be a “technician” while in the ring. But that doesn’t mean he’s not afraid to stand up and throw punches as was evidenced in his fight against Rollins in which George stood with the very strong Rollins and simply picked him apart with his boxing skills. This is what makes George so dangerous - he can box with the best of them, and he’s very well versed in submission techniques with his Jiu Jitsu skills.
After spending some time training, Sotiropoulos decided to move to the United States to chase his dream of fighting in the UFC. He currently lives and trains in San Diego. His professional record in Mixed Martial Arts is 7 wins and 2 losses.
In his semifinal match up George is paired with Tommy Speer, the super strong farm boy from Minnesota. Tommy is probably stronger than George, but George has great take down defense and is very skilled fighting on the ground - so it will be a very interesting match up for George.
A lot of people are picking George to fight in the finals of the The Ultimate Fighter 6, and George is a favorite to make it there, but he must not look past Tommy in his upcoming semifinal fight.
Regardless of the winner of that fight, George looks like he is going to have a promising future fighting in the UFC as he looks to mold himself to be the prototypical fighter like his hero, UFC legend Frank Shamrock. Expect to see a lot of George Sotiropoulos in upcoming events in the UFC.
